This drawing is an aerial view of an imagined temple. Each part of the drawing represents a different part of the structure, for instance the arms of the cross represent the roof of the temple, with the squares representing towers which reach up from the roof.
Like most of my work, this drawing is completed freehand and begins with concentric circles, these are symbolic of the first movement (see my ‘Cosmogonic Map’ drawing), and often are also symbolic of a cone-like tower, the central point being the highest.
This drawing is also the first in a series of my ‘cross-carpet pages’ (a term used to describe the pages of abstract decoration in medieval gospel texts), I think of these cross carpet pages as being a meditation aid for the artist and potentially the viewer.
This work is influenced by an interest in early gothic architecture, as well as the cross-carpet pages of the Lindisfarne gospels and the Book of Kells.
